Subject Choices


Grade 9 is an important year in the life of every learner. You need to start thinking about potential professions during grade 9. To make the right choice of subjects in grade 10, learners should know the career path they wish to pursue upon successful completion of their Grade 12 year.

To obtain the National Senior Certificate in Grade 12, learners must have SEVEN subjects – four compulsory and three choice subjects as chosen at the end of their Grade 9 year.

The four compulsory subjects are:

  • 2 official Languages:

*English Home Language

*Afrikaans First Additional Language or IsiZulu First Additional Language

  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
  • Life Orientation.

Combination Subject Packages

VERY IMPORTANT: STUDENTS MUST REGISTER / RE-REGISTER IMMEDIATELY AFTER MAKING THEIR SUBJECT CHOICES
At least 50% must obtained in Mathematics, Physical Science and Language for students to progress to the next grade.

Learners must also choose three optional subjects:

  • Computer Application Technologies
  • Business Studies
  • Tourism
  • History

TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SUBJECT CHOICES

SUBJECT CHOICES ALONE DO NOT GUARANTEE RE-REGISTRATION OR REGISTRATION
  • The school will not promote any learner to the next grade if they have any subject with an average below 40%
  • The Principal must approve all subjects, check marks and class availability
  • All classes must have a minimum of 18 students
  • Cannot take Physical Science without Mathematics (student must achieve a minimum of 50% in Mathematics in Grade (9)
  • CAT requirements – RECOMMENDED, NOT COMPULSORY

Access to a computer, internet, Microsoft Office Suite and Word at home
